“For me there does Billy, so enough with the word games, this is not a high school
debate. Mike’s parents want to forbid him from seeing you anymore, least
that is the present state of their demands.”
Billy was stunned. He had no idea that things had gotten to that point with Mike’s
folks. Why the fuck didn’t Mike tell him any of this? How could he not
tell him, they were supposed to be in love, least that is what he thought it
was.
“They can try.”
“Billy, they can do more than try, they can succeed unless we find a way to work this
out.”
“We?”
“Yes, we.”
Billy lowered his eyes briefly, the idea that his Dad would actually help him, would
actually take part in making this work out was a new concept. At first, he
had thought his dad was homophobic, specially after the scene with
Taylor
, but lately,
well he had surprised him with the birthday dinner and Mike.
He looked at his father from under his eyelids, staring at the smooth face, the deep
set eyes that peered out at him. Funny, he never noticed how full his
father’s eyes were, how they seemed to have some hidden sparkle deep
inside. It was almost as if something hidden was peeking out, trying to poke
through the years of pain and struggle.
“You really mean it?”
“Oh Billy, don’t you trust me? You are my son, of course I want to see you happy
and I know that for the time Mike has been around, well, you have been
different, more, well, as you said, more alive. Yes Billy I want you to be
happy, but only if this is real, not an infatuation or experiment.”
“It is real Dad, I don’t know, I can’t really explain it, except that when he is
around, I feel so different… so complete I guess but then not, I don’t
know, haven’t you ever felt like that?”
He stared at his
son, taking in the small wiry frame. Billy was still growing, and yet he
looked like an old man one second, then a blossoming young man the next. The
strain of his mother’s loss had taken its toll, but he still fought
through it, he still had the
