next to him. He glanced at his father, seeing something new, and his heart ached, as he
wished he could help him.
“Okay, something wrong?”
“Well, why don’t we just go down and talk?”
“Why don’t you just tell me here? You can sit on the bed.”
“Bill, damn it, okay, I don’t know how to say this, I mean, I can talk a jury into
anything yet when it comes to you boys, I feel like a first grader.”
“Just spit it out, is there something wrong? You aren’t sick are you?”
Billy’s eyes bulged out, and his heart started to beat rapidly. It was his secret
terror that his Dad would get sick or have an accident too and he couldn’t
stand that.
The idea alone brought him close to tears as he waited for his dad to answer, his eyes
glued to every facial twitch, every muscular movement, in an effort to make
sure that his dad wasn’t hiding anything.
“No… No I am fine, uh, I had lunch today with Mikes parents Billy.”
“Oh Shit… sorry dad… his parents? And?”
“Bill, they are concerned about all the time Mike has been spending here, and now his
studies are really taking a nose dive…”
“But that’s not right, he was doing great when we were studying together… they
can’t blame that on me or him being here… Dad you can’t let them.”
“Hush… I told them that, and well you know his dad and I go way back son, but
anyway, Margaret is very upset about it all.”
“Okay, but can’t you talk to her Dad? I mean, I can…”
“Bill, he told them about you and him.”
“WHAT?”
