Chapter Eight

Billy stared at his computer screen, looking but not really seeing anything. His
homework assignment lay on the bed, opened but unfinished. It was only
Wednesday and already he was feeling lonely, lost and miserable.
Mike was supposed to come over, but once again he hadn’t been able to show up, his
parents refusing to let him come home with Billy. They continued to use the
‘homework’ excuse and Mike had no choice. Billy didn’t understand it,
because Mike really was good, okay not great in math but shit he was right
up there in everything else, so why the sudden emphasis on homework at home?
So far the only time they had been able to spend together had been after the last two
football games and on Wednesday. He could feel his groin aching as he sat
there, thinking of Mike and trying to figure out what was going on. Each
time they passed in the hallway at school he could feel a strange electrical
charge run through his body and he knew that Mike felt it too.
Damn it, there had to be a way to get Mike’s parents to loosen the strings somehow.
Maybe if he talked with

show these last few weeks. Fuck, everyone he depended on was disappearing on
him, even his ritual of nattering online had cooled down somewhat.
Billy just stared at the screen, not even hearing his bedroom door open. He jumped when
he heard his father’s voice next to him.
“Shit, you scared me… oops, sorry Dad.”
“Yeah, uh, I need to talk with you Bill, maybe we should go downstairs?”
Billy’s face dropped as he stared into his father’s face. He could see a deep pain
etched across his forehead, and his eyes seemed rather clouded. He had
loosened up a little during his birthday and the week after, but he was back
into his sullen look.
